Coast Ranges is the project of Pat Balk, a Chicago native who soaked up the ‘90s indie boom in Chapel Hill, NC. Balk landed in Memphis, where his songwriting took shape in the bright, guitar-driven and heartfelt sound Coast Ranges delivers.
What sets Coast Ranges apart is the way Balk shapes his influences into something personal. You can hear echoes of R.E.M.’s shimmer and the scrappy hooks of The Replacements, but the voice at the center is distinctly his. Coast Ranges songs thrive on contradiction: melancholy that still feels hopeful, tight arrangements that leave room for ragged edges, and choruses that sound just as good shouted in a club as they do echoing out of a car window.
